In this first of three journeys, Solara is a widow with two sons, one grown, but living in a magical world of kings and knights inside his own head, and the other, a seemingly "normal" teenager who has a magical secret. Her sense of unease in the world, as if she not only doesn't fit in, but that she's not entirely...human, has begun to consume her daily life, and she begins to dream of another world. When she's contacted by an alien race living beneath the surface of the Earth, her life takes a drastic turn. Solara is excited for this new path, and hopes to find some answers to her past, but then it all goes horribly wrong. She and her boys, along with a few of their friends, are thrown through a portal to another world, and they must learn to survive while they explore how to get home. But is Earth really home for her? And can she trust their self-appointed guide in this strange, but familiar new world, who happens to be the man from her dreams?

But she's miserable. Her husband hasn't touched her in years, and the empty nest she sits in day after day is quickly becoming her prison. A conversation with her husband takes a turn she doesn't expect. He laughs. He won't change, and he won't give her a divorce. She tells her boys she needs to leave, and they seem oddly relieved, as if they know something she doesn't. They agree to help her, but her husband overhears. He pulls a gun and Amelia unleashes powers she'd long forgotten to escape. The next few years, she stays under the radar, keeps moving, pays for everything in the cash that her oldest manages to leave for her at pre-determined locations...and begins to remember who she really is. Her powers grow. Her husband, meanwhile, is using his nearly-unlimited resources to hunt her down. A slip-up at a local library reveals her location, and he sends a man to pick her up, but this man has no idea what he's walking into...and Amelia might just capture his heart before he can capture her.
